Wired vs. Wireless Computer Networks

Residential and small business networks can either be wired or wireless. Up until the last five years or so, Ethernet wired computer networking in New Jersey was the favorite method but today, Wi-Fi wireless networks are rapidly gaining ground. Both the methods have plus points and negative points but both are viable methods of building a computer network.

         * Reliability:

Wireless LANs are subject to more reliability troubles than wired LANs but as the hardware improves these differences are becoming less significant. Wireless LANs that use 802.11 b and g protocol are subject to interference from devices such as garage door openers and cordless telephones but when careful attention to the installation is paid, these problems can be minimized.

         * Performance:

Wireless LANs are distance sensitive and the further away from the signal source the worse the performance. The greater number of devices on the network also degrades the performance but it is usually good enough for everything but LAN gaming.
